Underworld
Directed by Len Wiseman
2003

One of the best vampire-style horror movies in recent years. It
has everything a decent horror film must have - perfect soundtrack,
action, great costumes, effects, and Kate Beckinsale acts very good
here - it will surely become the classic of the genre. The story
of the films tells us about a beautiful vampire warrior who is entangled
in a war between the vampire and werefolf races. Although she is
aligned with the vampires, she falls in love with a werefolf, who
longs for the war to end.
Freaks
Directed by Tod Browning
1932

This is a prime example of what films used to be and a sad reminder
that they will never quite be like this again. Based on the short
story 'Spurs' by Tod Robbins, the movie tells the story of a circus
midget who falls in love with a beautiful, 'normal' trapeze artist.
When she and her strongman lover try to poison him for his money,
the 'freaks' exact their revenge on them. In most ways this is the
first truely compassionate horror film ever made. But upon it's
release, censors flipped, audiences ran in horror, and the film
was yanked from the screen and banned in Europe for 40 years...
Sure, it's creepy and frightening. But it's also very sad. If you're
in the mood for something a little... uh... different... definitely
check this one out. You will be thankful you did.
The City of Lost Children (La Cite Des Enfant
Perdus)
Directed by Marc Caro, Jean-Pierre Jeunet
1995

On of the best sci-fi movies, often compared to "Dark City"
or the creations of famost Tim Burton. Before his romantic comedy
"Amelie", Jean-Pierre Jeunet was creating dark fairy-tales,
and "The City of Lost Children" is his absolute highlight.
This surrealistic film is filled with nightly, twilight atmosphere,
grotesque images, and the music created by Angelo Bandalamenti.
"The City of Lost Children" tells about a scientist in
a surrealist society, who kidnaps children to steal their dreams,
hoping that they will slow his aging process. But since they fear
him, he only gets their nightmares... Welcome to psychedelic, terrifying
journey.
